Comme au marché is inspired by my time living in Paris, my curiosity for all things food, and my desire to celebrate the small pleasures of daily life.
The literal translation of comme au marché is “as if at the market.” This blog – like a real, live market – is an ever-evolving thing. It will change with the seasons, the people I meet, the music I hear, the places I go. What ties it all together is something I call the “market mentality“.
Even when markets are stable (in terms of location), the people and products continually change. Whether we’re talking about seasonal produce, rambling musicians or hot local gossip, we arrive without fully knowing what we’re going to find. It’s the act of showing up with an open mind and the communal celebration of the day’s harvest that is the essence of the market mentality.
Je m’appelle Carly…
Originally from New England, I lived in Paris for two years, where I studied French culture and culinary criticism. Since moving to New York, I’ve worked in the fields of French culture, food culture, holistic health and as a freelance writer & editor.
In addition to approaching life comme au marché (as if at the market), I’m interested in why, how and what we communicate about food. I believe our relationship with food reflects our values and identities – cultural, social and individual – and is a tangible lens through which we can (re)consider the way we live our lives in general.
